A newly formed Facebook group, Vermont Barn Quilt Trail , combines interested followers from Northern Vermont (led by Sharon Perry), Chittenden County (led by Kimberly Hess) and the Green Mountain Quilters Guild (Marianne Kotch). Anyone interested is welcome to join.

Barn Quilts Sweep The State

Did you know that there are at least 600 barn quilts all over Vermont? Do you have a barn quilt affixed to your house, garage, barn, or other outbuilding? Would you like to have one? And would you like yours to be included in a statewide self-guided tour? Would you be interested in helping to document barn quilts in your area?

The GMQG is embarking on a project to coordinate efforts statewide, with the ultimate goal the creation of an online interactive map of barn quilt locations by county. Recent information sessions in Barre and Woodstock drew over 50 enthusiastic quilters and non-quilters who left thinking about adding barns quilts to their homes and outbuildings. Speakers have included Sharon Perry and Fern Mercure of Franklin County and Carrie Cauoette-DeLallo and Sarah Cauoette of Chelsea Arts. GMQG hopes to offer more of these sessions around the state in the future.

Here’s a video link to the Barn Quilt Info Session we sponsored in Woodstock on Saturday, Sept. 30.

If you already have a barn quilt and would like to be part of the statewide barn quilt trail, AND you aren’t already part of the Franklin County or Chelsea groups, please send us your information. Complete the online form at this link (online form ).

If you are excited about this project and would like to contribute barn quilt information from your area of the state, use this form to document the location and other information (online form ).

Vermont has several active groups involved in promoting barn quilts regionally. Barn Quilts of Northern Vermont – organized by avid quilter Sharon Perry and Fern Mercure of the Sheldon Raiders Homemakers Club, their original 2009 projects have grown to include over 500 barn quilts in Franklin County. They hope to expand their project to other counties.

  • Lamoille County barn quilt enthusiasts can contact Courtney Percy at (802)359-2070 to join the barn quilt trail in that area.

  • In 2018 Chelsea Arts Collective members Carrie Caouette-DeLallo and Sarah Caouette encouraged local artists in and around Chelsea to create over 125 barn quilts. Their website offers an amazing slide show.

  • Quilters’ Corner at Middlebury Sew and Vac occasionally offers barn quilt classes led by Sandra Bonomo. The day-long sessions cover how to draft, tape and paint a pre-primed 2’ x 2’ board that can be attached to a building.

  • Kimberly Hess offers barn quilt painting workshops, Barn Quilt Therapy, in Essex. She’s also willing to come to a town to teach a minimum of eight people. Contact Kimberly at (802) 238-4169 or [email protected] for details. Announcements of upcoming workshops are listed on Kimberly’s Facebook page, “Barn Quilt Therapy.”
